In April 2021, Switzerland was the first stop on our big trip. <a href=\"https:\/\/max-haase.com\/en\/van-life-europe-camper-adventure-start\/\">European road trips<\/a>, And it has set the bar unrealistically high: turquoise mountain lakes, snow-covered Alpine passes, picture-perfect villages and an infrastructure that is unparalleled in Europe.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"margin-top: 3em;\"><\/div>\n<h2>The most beautiful mountain lakes in Switzerland for campers<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Switzerland has an estimated 7,000 lakes \u2013 and it feels like every single one is more photogenic than the last. Our favorites for campervan trips:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blausee<\/strong> (Bernese Oberland) \u2013 Crystal-clear, truly blue water, surrounded by a fir forest. Admission: 9 CHF.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lake Oeschinen<\/strong> (near Kandersteg) \u2013 Accessible by gondola lift + 20-minute hike. One of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Alps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lake Cauma<\/strong> (Graub\u00fcnden) \u2013 Hidden lake in the forest, accessible via a funicular railway. Perfect for swimming in summer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lake Poschiavo<\/strong> (Engadine) \u2013 Italian flair in Switzerland, the Bernina Express passes right by.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Drone tip:<\/strong> In der Schweiz gelten strenge Drohnenregeln. Immer vorher in der BAZL-App (Bundesamt f\u00fcr Zivilluftfahrt) pr\u00fcfen.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"margin-top: 3em;\"><\/div>\n<h2>Alpine passes by campervan \u2013 The most spectacular routes<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>Alpine passes<\/strong> They are the highlight of any tour of Switzerland. Our top 3:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Furka Pass<\/strong> (2,429m) \u2013 Pure James Bond feeling (this is where \u201eGoldfinger\u201c was filmed). The switchbacks are narrow but manageable with a van.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grimsel Pass<\/strong> (2,164m) \u2013 Connects Bernese Oberland and Valais, spectacular reservoirs along the way.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Julier Pass<\/strong> (2,284m) \u2013 One of the few Alpine passes open all year round, gentler curves than Furka\/Grimsel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> Many Alpine passes don&#039;t open until late May\/early June (weather permitting). Always check current opening times at tcs.ch. Carry snow chains in spring!<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"margin-top: 3em;\"><\/div>\n<h2>Campervan costs in Switzerland \u2013 Honest calculation<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Switzerland is expensive \u2013 but predictable:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Campsites:<\/strong> 30-50 CHF\/night (significantly more expensive than the rest of Europe)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Free standing:<\/strong> Tolerated in many cantons, but increasingly restricted. Use the TCS app and Park4Night.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eat:<\/strong> Restaurant menu from 25 CHF, supermarket significantly cheaper (Aldi\/Lidl also exist in Switzerland)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diesel:<\/strong> ~1.80 CHF\/liter (cheaper than in Germany!)<\/li>\n<li><strong>motorway vignette:<\/strong> 40 CHF\/year (mandatory on motorways)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p><strong>Budget tip:<\/strong> Cooking for yourself, staying at TCS campsites (the cheapest chain), and shopping near the German or Italian borders. This way, 70-100 CHF\/day for 2 people is realistic.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"margin-top: 3em;\"><\/div>\n<h2>FAQ \u2013 Traveling through Switzerland by campervan<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Is it possible to camp freely with a van in Switzerland?<\/strong><br>\nRegulations vary regionally. In some cantons it&#039;s tolerated, in others (Valais, Graub\u00fcnden) it&#039;s enforced. The Park4Night app is essential. Parking on private property requires permission.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Which Alpine passes can you drive with a campervan?<\/strong><br>\nMost are doable, except for very narrow passes like the Klausen Pass. Furka, Grimsel, Julier, Susten, and San Bernardino are all suitable for vans. Do not drive in snow or ice.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>When is the best time for van life in Switzerland?<\/strong><br>\nJune to September. We visited two beautiful mountain lakes, both of which were highlights! At the first lake, we were surprised by many snow avalanches crashing into the clear water on the other side of the lake. A few young Swiss people were calmly fishing nearby :D. We were fascinated by how many people were gathering here during Covid times to have a beer by Lake Zurich or dance to guitar music on the promenade - it felt good to be among people again. Afterwards, we visited the largest waterfall in Europe - the Rhine Falls. We went on another hike and tried a via ferrata - but we had to give up after the first 200 meters because people coming down told us that the via ferrata was closed further up... \ud83d\ude44\ud83e\udd28<\/p>\n<p>Just before the Italian border, we took a short detour to the Roman bridge, which is located in a wonderful landscape and is definitely a MUST-SEE! Die riesigen, schneebedeckten Berge,\u00a0die braunen K\u00fche mit Glocke um den Hals, die gelben Blumen auf den gr\u00fcn leuchtenden Wiesen, der K\u00e4se an jeder Ecke und nat\u00fcrlich auch der Schweizer Akzent machen die Schweiz jedes Mal wieder zu einem atemberaubenden Erlebnis!\u00a0<\/p> <p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unser erstes Ziel waren St. Gallen und das beschauliche \u00d6rtchen Appenzell. Hier haben wir an einem sch\u00f6nen Fluss gestanden, mit Blick auf die umliegenden Berge.<\/p> <p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n[gallery ids=\"125,126,127,129\"]\n<p><br><\/p><p>Unser n\u00e4chstes Ziel war der sch\u00f6ne <strong>Wallensee<\/strong> - einer der tiefsten Seen der Schweiz, mit glasklarem, t\u00fcrkisfarbenen Wasser. Der perfekte Spot, um einen leckeren Milchshake im Camper zu mixen und es sich gem\u00fctlich zu machen :).<\/p><p><br><\/p> <p><\/p> <p><\/p>\n[gallery ids=\"133,134,135\"]\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><br><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nat\u00fcrlich machten wir auch einige Wanderungen. Bei den Bergen nat\u00fcrlich ein absolutes <strong style=\"background-color: initial; font-size: 1em;\">MUSS<\/strong> in der Schweiz. Dabei haben wir unter anderem zwei wundersch\u00f6ne Bergseen besucht - beide ein Highlight! Am ersten See \u00fcberraschten uns direkt viele Schneelawinen, die auf der anderen Seite des Sees in das klare Wasser krachten. Seelenruhig daneben ein paar junge Schweizer am Angeln :D. Beim zweiten See \u00fcbernachteten wir mit dem Camper und machten Abends am zugefrorenen See mit sternenklarem Himmel noch ein sch\u00f6nes Grillerchen \u00fcber dem Feuer.<\/p> <p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p> <p><\/p>\n[gallery ids=\"130,132,144,131,138,139\"]\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><br><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nat\u00fcrlich wollten wir uns das Stadtleben auch nicht entgehen lassen, daher besuchten wir noch die sch\u00f6ne Stadt Z\u00fcrich. Wir waren fasziniert dar\u00fcber, wie viele Menschen hier zur Covid Zeit zusammen sind und gemeinsam ein Bierchen am Z\u00fcrichsee trinken oder zu Gitarrenmusik an der Promenade tanzen - es tat mal wieder richtig gut unter Menschen zu kommen. Im Anschluss besuchten wir noch den gr\u00f6\u00dften Wasserfall Europas - den Rheinfall. Den Tag lie\u00dfen wir mit einem Film auf unserer Leinwand ausklingen - nat\u00fcrlich haben wir f\u00fcr jeden Luxus im Camper gesorgt. \ud83d\ude01\ud83d\ude1c<br><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><br><\/p> <p><\/p>\n[gallery ids=\"136,137,142,149,148,147\"]\n<p>\u00a0<\/p> <p>Anschlie\u00dfend machten wir uns auf in den S\u00fcden der Schweiz, wo wir schon das erste Sommer-Feeling bekamen, da die Leute hier alle Italienisch redeten :D . Wir unternahmen wieder eine Wanderung und versuchten uns an einem Klettersteig - den wir allerdings nach den ersten 200 m schon wieder beenden konnten, weil uns Leute entgegenkamen und sagten, dass der Klettersteig weiter oben gesperrt sei... \ud83d\ude44\ud83e\udd28<\/p> <p>Kurz vor der Grenze Italiens unternahmen wir noch einen kurzen Umweg zur R\u00f6merbr\u00fccke, die mitten in einer wundervollen Landschaft liegt und definitiv ein MUST-SEE ist!
