The city, situated at an altitude of 3,400 meters, is beautiful: colonial churches built on Inca walls, vibrant markets, and a backpacker scene that is second to none. <strong>Important:<\/strong> Take 2-3 days to acclimatize \u2013 the altitude is real and altitude sickness can affect anyone. Coca tea helps.<\/p>\n\n<p>Must-sees in Cusco: <strong>Sacsayhuam\u00e1n<\/strong> (megalithic Inca fortress), <strong>San Pedro Market<\/strong> (1.50 \u20ac meal with juice), and the <strong>Plaza de Armas<\/strong> at night.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"margin-top: 3em;\"><\/div>\n<h2>Rainbow Mountain Peru: Is the hype worth it? (Honest assessment)<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>Rainbow Mountain<\/strong> (Monta\u00f1a de Siete Colores, 5,036m) is THE Instagram spot in Peru. The question everyone asks: Is it worth it? My answer: Yes, BUT only in good weather. When it&#039;s cloudy, the colors disappear completely, and you&#039;re standing on a gray mountain at 5,000m, freezing.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The tour:<\/strong> Day trip from Cusco (3-4 hour drive, then a 2-hour hike to 5,036m). Cost: \u20ac15-25 including transport and entrance fee. The hike is technically easy, but the altitude makes it strenuous \u2013 headaches and shortness of breath are common. <strong>Tip:<\/strong> Bring extra oxygen (available for purchase in Cusco).<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"margin-top: 3em;\"><\/div>\n<h2>The Sacred Valley &amp; Machu Picchu Preparation<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>Sacred Valley of the Incas<\/strong> The Sacred Valley (Valle Sagrado) between Cusco and Machu Picchu is packed with Inca ruins: <strong>Ollantaytambo<\/strong> (impressive terraced area), <strong>Pisac<\/strong> (Market + Ruins), <strong>Moray<\/strong> (Circular Inca terraces, resembling an amphitheater). We didn't expect much from Lima since we hadn't heard many good things about the city. However, once again it was confirmed: always make your own experience! We really liked Lima overall - all in all, it's very European (at least the tourist center), very well-maintained, and everything was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Additionally, the people were super friendly, the food was good, and the prices were quite cheap (except in Miraflores). bus to the village of Paracas, which is about 4 hours away. The village doesn't really have much to offer for tourists, except for the well-known Belestas Islands - a group of islands under nature protection, where you can observe thousands of birds, pelicans, seals, and even penguins. Ica is actually not touristy at all, since there really isn't much to do here - however, it looks completely different in the oasis of Huachina, which is only 15 minutes away. Huachina is located in the middle of huge sand dunes and has many restaurants, bars, and especially huge amounts of tourists to offer. \ud83d\ude02 Here we did a sand buggy tour, which you shouldn't miss! worst bus ride of my life! \ud83d\ude02\ud83d\ude02 For anyone who wants to visit Cusco (which should definitely not be missing on any bucket list!), I recommend taking the flight from Lima, which costs almost the same but saves many nerves...<\/p>\n<p>Cusco itself is beautiful! There are so many things to experience in the city and its surroundings, especially if you like being in nature. In addition to magnificent viewpoints, many alpacas, traditional Inca buildings, and great people, there is of course one main attraction near Cusco: Machu Picchu. However, there will be a separate blog post about this because it was a very special adventure. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, in Cusco, there is the right food for every taste and especially many markets with super delicious fruit &amp; vegetables for very little money. our plan and decided that Arequipa would be our final destination in Peru. Before heading there, we made another special stop at Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world! \ud83d\ude0e<\/p>\n<p>As befits such a special stop, we stayed in a very special accommodation - right in the middle of the lake! We spent wonderful nights on our small floating island in close proximity to breeding Titicaca divers, pigs living on small islands, and many other local animal species. <p>Finally, Arequipa was on our itinerary. We also traveled there by bus, and this bus ride was terrible - the bus system in Peru is well developed, but the buses would probably not be in operation in any other country in the world because neither air conditioning (at over 30 degrees Celsius outside temperature) nor the seats work (some seats cannot be reclined, while others only have the recline function\u2026 \ud83d\ude02).<\/p>\n<p>The center of Arequipa does not offer much in terms of tourist attractions, but there are many things to explore in the surrounding area, such as the Colca Canyon. Since we only had one week and had already done a lot of hiking in Cusco, we skipped this adventure. Instead, we only explored the city center, worked a lot, and went rafting for the first time - a very special experience that we will definitely do again! \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n<p>Next, we were supposed to fly to... or so we thought! Once again, COVID threw a wrench into our plans. We had packed our bags again and were planning to go to the airport the next day when the results of our PCR tests came in. Janet's test was fine, but mine was positive - what a bummer. Although I had no symptoms, it was time for me to quarantine and postpone our flight... again! Well, if there's one thing we've learned from traveling, it's that things never go exactly as planned. Von Lima hatten wir uns nicht so viel erhofft, da wir bisher nicht viel Gutes \u00fcber die Stadt geh\u00f6rt hatten. Allerdings hat sich wieder einmal best\u00e4tigt: Mache immer deine eigene Erfahrung! Lima hat uns insgesamt sehr gut gefallen - alles in allem ist es sehr europ\u00e4isch (zumindest das Touristenzentrum), sehr gepflegt und alles war sch\u00f6n weihnachtlich dekoriert. Au\u00dferdem waren die Menschen super freundlich, das Essen gut und auch die Preise ausgesprochen g\u00fcnstig (au\u00dfer direkt in Miraflores). Ein Besuch in der Hauptstadt geh\u00f6rt f\u00fcr mich also f\u00fcr jeden Peru Trip dazu! \u263a\ufe0f<\/p>\n[gallery _orderbyrandom=\"false\" ids=\"517,524,500,462,474,476,502,520,519\"]\n<p>Von Lima nahmen wir einen Reisebuss ins knapp 4h entfernte Dorf Paracas. Das Dorf hat touristisch eigentlich nichts zu bieten, au\u00dfer die bekannten Belestas Islands - eine Inselgruppe unter Naturschutz, auf denen man tausende V\u00f6gel, Pelikane, Robben und sogar Pinguine beobachten kann. Diese Tour machten wir dann auch am n\u00e4chsten Tag und haben es auf keinen Fall bereut. :) L\u00e4nger muss man dann allerdings nicht in Paracas bleiben, also ging es einen Tag sp\u00e4ter auch wieder weiter...<\/p>\n[gallery ids=\"477,465,460,479,466,480\"]\n<p>Unser n\u00e4chster Stopp war Ica, wo wir eine gesamte Woche blieben, da wir zwischendurch noch viel gearbeitet haben. Ica ist eigentlich \u00fcberhaupt nicht touristisch, da man hier auch echt nicht viel machen kann - allerdings sieht das in der 15min entfernten Oase Huachina ganz anders aus. Mitten zwischen riesigen Sandd\u00fcnen liegt Huachina, welches viele Restaurants, Bars und ganz besonders riesige Mengen an Touristen zu bieten hat. \ud83d\ude02 Hier machten wir eine Sand Buggy Tour, welche man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollten! Wir fuhren den ganzen Nachmittag mit dem Buggy durch die W\u00fcste, waren Sandboarden und haben anschlie\u00dfend den Sonnenuntergang in der W\u00fcste genossen - ein tolles Erlebnis! \ud83d\ude2c<\/p>\n[gallery ids=\"467,483,468,485,486,487,488,489,622\"]\n<p>Von Ica nahmen wir dann wieder einen Bus bis nach Cusco. 18,5h, \u00fcber Nacht und durch hunderte Kurven - die schlimmste Busfahrt meines Lebens! \ud83d\ude02\ud83d\ude02 Jedem der Cusco besuchen m\u00f6chte (was definitiv auf keiner Bucket List fehlen darf!) empfehle ich den Flug von Lima, welcher fast dasselbe kostet, aber viele Nerven erspart...<\/p> <p>Cusco selbst ist wundersch\u00f6n! In der Stadt selbst und im Umland gibt es so wahnsinnig viele Dinge zu erleben, vor allem wenn man gerne in der Natur ist. Neben grandiosen Aussichtspunkten, vielen Alpacas, traditionellen Inca Bauten und tollen Menschen gibt es nat\u00fcrlich ganz besonders eine Hauptattraktion in der N\u00e4he von Cusco: den Machu Picchu. Hierzu kommt allerdings noch mal ein gesonderter Blog-Post, da dies ein ganz besonderes Abenteuer war. \ud83d\ude42<\/p> <p>Au\u00dferdem gibt es in Cusco f\u00fcr jeden Gaumen das richtige Essen und vor allem ganz viele M\u00e4rkte mit super leckerem Obst &amp; Gem\u00fcse f\u00fcr den ganz kleinen Taler. Eben weil es sich hier auch so gut leben l\u00e4sst, haben wir insgesamt knapp 3 Wochen in Cusco verbracht und ich bin mir sicher, dass dies nicht mein letztes Mal hier war!&nbsp;\ud83d\ude0b<\/p>\n[gallery ids=\"530,532,533,537,538,539,542,548,549,550,553,555,545,546,536\"]\n<p>In Cusco haben wir dann unseren Plan noch einmal \u00fcberarbeitet und Arequipa soll nun unser letztes Ziel in Peru sein. Bevor es dort hingeht, haben wir aber noch einmal einen anderen, ganz besonderen Stopp eingelegt, und zwar am Titicacasee, dem h\u00f6chsten schiffbaren See der Welt! \ud83d\ude0e<\/p> <p>Wie es sich f\u00fcr so einen besonderen Stopp geh\u00f6rt, haben wir auch eine ganz besondere Unterkunft gehabt - n\u00e4mlich mitten auf dem See! In unmittelbarer N\u00e4he zu br\u00fctenden Titicaca-Tauchern, Schweinen, die auf kleinen Inseln wohnen und vielen anderen heimischen Tierarten haben wir wundervolle N\u00e4chte auf unserer kleinen schwimmenden Insel verbracht. Unser Gastgeber Julio hat uns au\u00dferdem viel \u00fcber die Kultur der Floating-Islands Bewohner erkl\u00e4rt und uns alle sch\u00f6ne Ecken auf dem Titicaca See gezeigt. Zudem konnten wir, wann immer wir wollten, mit dem Kayak oder dem Kanu den See auf eigene Faust erkunden. Zum Abend gab es super frisches und regionales Essen und wir haben den Abend an unserem kleinen Kamin, mit Blick auf den See ausklingen lassen. Wer also noch nach einer ganz besonderen \u00dcbernachtungsm\u00f6glichkeit sucht, schaut einmal bei Titicaca Lodges vorbei! \u263a\ufe0f<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.titicacalodgeperu.com\/\" > Zu Titicaca-Lodges <\/a>\n[gallery ids=\"587,588,589,591,592,594,596,597,600\"]\n<p>Zu guter Letzt stand dann Arequipa auf dem Plan. Auch hierhin sind wir wieder mit dem Bus gefahren und auch diese Busfahrt war schrecklich - das Bussystem in Peru ist zwar gut ausgebaut, aber die Busse w\u00fcrden wahrscheinlich in keinem anderen Land der Welt mehr in Betrieb sein, weil weder Klimaanlage (bei \u00fcber 30 Grad Au\u00dfentemperatur), noch die Sitze, funktionieren (manche Sitze lassen sich nicht nach hinten stellen, andere haben nur noch die Liege-Funktion... \ud83d\ude02).<\/p> <p>Das Zentrum von Arequipa hat touristisch nicht sonderlich viel zu bieten, im Umland kann man jedoch viele Dinge erkunden, z.B. den Colca Canyon. Da wir nur eine Woche Zeit hatten und erst in Cusco viel wandern waren, haben wir uns dieses Abenteuer jedoch gespart. Stattdessen haben wir nur die Innenstadt erkundet, viel gearbeitet und waren zum ersten Mal Raften - ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis, was wir definitiv nicht zum letzten Mal gemacht haben! \ud83d\ude01<\/p> <p>Weiter ging es dann mit dem Flugzeug nach...... Dachten wir uns zumindest! Denn wieder einmal hat uns Covid einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. Wir hatten unsere Taschen mal wieder fertig gepackt und wollten am n\u00e4chsten Tag zum Flughafen, als die Ergebnisse unserer PCR-Tests eintrudelten. Bei Janet war zwar alles in Ordnung, aber mein Test war positiv - was ein Mist. Ich hatte zwar keinerlei Symptome, aber dennoch hie\u00df es dann nat\u00fcrlich erstmal ab in Quarant\u00e4ne und Flug verschieben... schon wieder! Na ja, wenn wir eine Sache beim Reisen gelernt haben, dann dass immer alles anders kommt, als man denkt.
