Wrong. I've been doing nothing else for over eight years. In more than 82 countries visited, I've learned that the best travel experiences happen precisely where adventure meets comfort. Where you're dropped off by helicopter onto a glacier in the morning and spend the evening in a lodge overlooking the mountains. Where you spend the whole day kitesurfing on secluded beaches and then recharge in a spa.

This guide is for those who want more than just a beach vacation—but also don't want to resort to backpacking austerity. 1. E5 Alpine crossing with lodge accommodations (Austria → Italy)

The classic E5 hike from Oberstdorf to Merano is, in my opinion, the perfect introductory adventure for luxury adventure travelers. Five stages through three countries, breathtaking alpine scenery — and the huts on the E5 are not spartan bivouacs, but often surprisingly comfortable mountain huts with hot meals, showers, and panoramic terraces.

My tip: Book the premium rooms at the Braunschweiger Hütte (2,759m) and the Memminger Hütte. The surcharge is minimal, but you get a twin room instead of a 20-person dormitory. And the sunrise over the Ötztal Glacier from the Braunschweiger Hütte is one of the most spectacular moments I've ever captured with a drone.

2. Overwater Villas on the Red Sea (Saudi Arabia)

Saudi Arabia is a hidden gem in the luxury adventure segment. The Red Sea Project, in which I was one of the first European creators to participate, offers overwater villas on pristine coral islands—comparable to the Maldives, but with an underwater world that is still completely untouched. Here, manta rays swim directly beneath your villa.

The adventure: snorkeling in pristine reefs, desert safaris through the Hejaz Mountains, and private dining on a private sandbank in the evening. Within three years, Saudi Arabia has built a tourism infrastructure that makes many established luxury destinations look outdated.

4. Safari Lodge in Kenya (Masai Mara & Lake Nakuru)

For me, a Kenyan safari is the gold standard in the luxury adventure sector. Nowhere else in the world do you get so much wildlife action in such a short time — and the lodges in the Masai Mara are among the best in the world.

My personal highlight: Two weeks with the DJI Mini 4 Pro over the Masai Mara. Flamingos at Lake Nakuru from a drone's perspective. Lions hunting. And sitting in a lodge in the evenings that looks like a tent from the outside, but has a freestanding bathtub inside with a view of the savanna.

Cost: Premium safari (10 days, private conservancy, private guide) from €4,000 per person. Budget option with group safari from €1,500.

5. Philippines Island Hopping with Private Boat Charter

The Philippines are the most underrated luxury adventure destination in Southeast Asia. Over 7,000 islands—and most of them are uninhabited. I spent five weeks in the Philippines and discovered an unbeatable combination: private boat charters between the islands.

Instead of crowded tourist boats, you can rent a bangka boat with crew for €100–200 per day and be taken to islands that aren't on Google Maps. El Nido, Coron, Siargao—with your own boat, the backpacker trail becomes a luxury experience. Accommodation in boutique resorts starts at €80 per night.

6. Basque Country Culinary Adventure (Spain)

The Basque Country is my insider tip for food and adventure travelers in Europe. San Sebastián has the highest density of Michelin stars per square kilometer in the world — and the wild coast between Bilbao and San Sebastián is a paradise for surfers, hikers and drone photographers.

I've been to Albania twice (2023 and 2025) and produced more drone content both times than on any other trip. The mountain lakes, the coast, the Ottoman architecture in Berat and Gjirokastër — all photogenic, all affordable, all still unspoiled.

Madeira is the perfect luxury adventure island for those who don't want to fly for 20 hours. In just four hours, you can be on a subtropical island with 2,500 kilometers of levada trails, spectacular drone spots, and some of the best boutique hotels in Europe.

My highlight: The Levada das 25 Fontes — a hike through a laurel forest to a hidden waterfall. Afterwards, back to the hotel in Funchal with its infinity pool and city views. Costs for one week: flights from €150, hotel from €120 per night, rental car from €30 per day.

10. Croatia coast by sailboat (Dalmatia)

Croatia is often labeled as overcrowded—and yes, Dubrovnik in August is terrible. But: Rent a sailboat (or catamaran with skipper, from €200/day per person for 6 people) and experience Dalmatia from the water. Discover hidden coves on Vis and Hvar that no tourist can reach on foot. Anchor in front of restaurants accessible only by boat.

I've travelled through Croatia twice – once overland in my VW R, and once by sailboat. The difference is like night and day. From the water, Croatia is still paradise.

Tip 1: Book shoulder season

The best time for luxury adventures is almost always the shoulder season: March–May and September–November. You'll pay 30–501 TP3T less for hotels, the destinations are less crowded, and the weather is often better than in the height of summer (especially in Southern Europe, where July/August is too hot for hiking).

Tip 2: Use a local fixer instead of a travel agency

For a true luxury adventure, you don't need a tour operator—you need a local fixer. These are local guides who give you access to places no tourist knows about. In Albania, I discovered hidden mountain lakes this way, and in Saudi Arabia, secluded desert camps. Ask for recommendations at boutique hotels or use platforms like GetYourGuide for premium tours.

Tip 3: Pack your drone (but check the rules)
